GM’s next generation dexos® 1 specification, dexos® 1 Gen 3, has arrived. The challenges being posed by new engine hardware and technologies are being met head on – so here’s what you need to know.
The dexos® specification and trademark are exclusive to General Motors, LLC.
Using substandard oil can affect engine performance and, in the worst-case-scenario, may damage or harm the engine. GM wants to make sure that every car, anywhere in the world, regardless of manufacturer, has access to the highest quality oil. The dexos® engine oil specification represents a high quality, robust oil formulated to some of the most rigorous specifications in the industry. Only licensed dexos® products have been certified by GM to meet the dexos® specification.
Dexos® 1 Gen 3 is being used by GM to meet their newest hardware performance needs. GM has, once again, improved performance with dexos® 1 Gen 3 in almost all areas, adding increased performance limits for the existing tests and replaced the legacy GMVFE fuel economy and GMSPI low-speed preignition tests with more demanding versions. Areas where Gen 3 outperforms Gen 2 are:
Yes, dexos® 1 Gen 3 is backward compatible with previous generation dexos® 1.
GM dexos® 1 Gen 2 products were still available when Gen 3 products hit the shelves due to inventories transitioning. All Gen 2 products are now obsolete and all suppliers and customers should be using GM dexos® 1 Gen 3 licensed products.
