Unfortunate End to Tough Month of May for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports

May 29, 2017

The month of May did not fall the way Schmidt Peterson Motorsports (SPM) had hoped for, as all three of its cars were involved in incidents in the 101st running of the Indianapolis.

Starting 13th (Mikhail Aleshin), 17th (James Hinchcliffe) and 20th (Jay Howard), the Petro-Canada Lubricants sponsored SPM trio aimed at combining speed with efficient pit strategies to move them forward.

Jay Howard’s race fell apart at the quarter mark of the race when he was involved in a massive wreck on Lap 53 involving Scott Dixon. Howard and Dixon were quickly released from the infield car center, but both had severe damage to their cars. Due to the extensive damage to cars and racetrack, the race was briefly red flagged on Lap 55.

James Hinchcliffe had an uneventful day, running in the top 15, until he got collected through no fault of his own on Lap 184 in a multi-car pile up. He would wind up 22nd as the 101st Running of The Greatest Spectacle in Racing concluded.

For the team, a quick turnaround process now commences as Aleshin and Hinchcliffe are back on track Friday, June 2, in the streets of Detroit for a double-header race weekend.

"Pretty awful end to the day for the ARROW Electronics Schmidt Peterson Motorsports crew. At some points we were great in the pits and some times we lost a bunch of spots. It was just a classic 500 mile ebb and flow sort of race. We found ourselves in the right place at the end, inside the top 10, with just a handful of laps to go. Unfortunately, on a restart, which is where we have been strong the last few times in making up some spots, Oriol (Servia) and James Davison were running hard and got into each other. I slowed up to avoid the wreck and unfortunately, Will (Power) lost control trying to avoid everything and just collected us both. Wrong place wrong time. Gutted for everyone on the team because we didn’t have the same pace as last year but we were trucking away and fighting and got ourselves in a good spot at the end, so thank you very much to them for all their hard work all month."
