Downtime is a killer in the refrigerated goods industry. Missing specified times for docking and delivery has a huge impact not only on customer service commitments, but also on productivity costs. Adding to this challenge is the stress and strain the engine faces from stop-andgo routing. According to owner Al Peavler, the only way to minimize unplanned downtime in these conditions is through a strong preventative maintenance program and top-tier lubricants. Ultimately, high oil consumption and wear issues associated with bearing failures led Peavler to explore alternative lubricant options.

Peavler worked with Eric Arvin of Ackerman Oil to determine the best fit for his operating conditions and needs. They put Petro-Canada Lubricants’ DURON heavy-duty engine oil to the test, first trialling the SAE 15W-40 grade in two trucks in the hopes that Peavler would convert the entire fleet. It wasn’t long before Peavler decided that switching his trucks over to DURON would provide him the best value, so the switch was made. Even since the first trial, they have switched to the lower viscostity DURON SHP 10W-30, to improve overall fuel efficiency.
