ST. LOUIS, M.O. – After battling championship contenders and running in the top-five, Schmidt Peterson Motorsports (SPM) driver James Hinchcliffe finished the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 in 8th, securing his seventh top-ten finish of 2017.
"Solid day," said Hinchcliffe after the race. "Despite Starting 10th and finishing 8th and only a two position swing it was a lot more dramatic day than that, but I think we made some good changes to the car throughout the night and we were a lot racier than we were in second practice yesterday, so big credit to the engineers. The guys [No. 5 Arrow Electronincs SPM Honda team] were awesome in the pit stops today, we made up some spots there. We just ultimately got caught out on the last yellow. It was a wrong-place, wrong-time and Conor [Daly] came around the outside of us there and took all of the air off us. I had to slide up the racetrack and I think we maybe damaged a tire when we did that because after that we had a pretty big vibration and we couldn’t really attack Charlie [Kimball] there at the end. Probably should of finished sixth but we’ll take a solid top-ten and hopefully build on that for Watkins [Glen]."
Hinchcliffe was running in the top-five for over half of the 248-lap contest. With great pit stops from the No. 5 Arrow Electronics SPM Honda team, the 30-year-old Canadian would battle for fourth with Scott Dixon.
Next, the Verizon IndyCar Series travels to historic Watkins Glen International Raceway in upstate New York.
